A SHORT EXERCISE
You may have noted that the object is a caterpillar and that it is one of many insects that make up the class of Lepidoptera. You may also have observed that it is feeding and growing, changing moment by moment. Did you also consider that caterpillars exist in relationship to the plants that they eat and that predators, such as birds, that eat them? Part of the concept of a caterpillar lies in what it eats and what eats it. These relationships make it what it is. Finally, caterpillars transform by mutating, somewhat spectacularly, into butterflies or moths.
Metathinking involves the conscious application of four thinking modes.
STRUCTURE
part of a complex ecosystem
When you notice that something is part of a bigger whole – you are engaging the Structural thinking mode.
PROCESS
constantly changing and growing
When you notice that something is continually changing – you are engaging the Process thinking mode.
RELATIONSHIP
connected into a food chain
When you notice that something is related to something else – it’s the Relationship thinking mode.
TRANSFORMATION
metamorphasizes into a butterfly
And when you notice that something is transforming – it’s the Transformational thinking mode.
